The Simpsons MovieMovies
The Simpsons MovieSaturday the 15th of SeptemberMovies Okay, if you expect me to give you some back-story on who the Simpsons are, you’re out of luck. Come on! Who hasn’t seen at least one episode of America’s most famous family? The only difference here is that they’ve finally made it to the big screen. Rumours of this film have been circulating for almost a decade. The most popular rumour had our yellow-skinned protagonists in 3D. This stirred many fans. From Toy Story to Cars, animation has taken a huge leap forward in the time the Simpsons have dominated our small screen. Yet, when the project finally got green-lighted, creator, Matt Groening, elected to show the Simpsons in their natural light – 2D! The question then becomes, why see The Simpsons Movie on the big screen? What’s the advantage? Won’t it just be similar to three back-to-back episodes? In truth, there is no reason to pay $14 to watch the Simpsons in celluloid. Sure, the film is brilliantly written and the gags come at such a pace you find yourself missing half of them. However compared to what we’ve been privy to for almost 18 years, there’s nothing exceptionally new. Homer says it himself, “I can't believe we're paying to watch something we could see on TV for free! If you ask me, everyone in this theatre is a BIG sucker!” As the movie heads into the second hour the length becomes apparent. Not from boredom, but more because it just feels wrong. Obviously a second question then occurs: Is it worth seeing at all? YES! Even if you have avidly watched all 400 episodes! This is the Simpsons creative team at their best. Who else could take a movie from the massacre of the band Green Day straight through to a plot to destroy all of Springfield? And all the time delivering enough comedy to make the movie an abs workout! Just try walking away from The Simpsons Movie NOT humming Spider-Pig! The humour is infectious, the story is classic, but you can’t help feeling like there could have been more.
