Let’s be clear. You got to see Transformers for 2 reasons! Either you want to see the heroes of your childhood come to life or you’re just after a crapload of booms! This movie meets both needs.

The story – for anyone that wasn’t a child in the last 25 years – is based on a group of alien robots that take the form of vehicles. The Autobots, our heroes, are lead by the valiant Optimus Prime, whilst the Decepticons, the villains, follow the treacherous Megatron.

Both sides have come to Earth in search of the All Spark, the giver-of-life, but whereas the Autobots are willing to work with humans to protect Earth, the Decepticons will destroy everything in their path.

In spite of all the mega-huge shape-shifting robots, the movie centres on Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf, recently of Disturbia and Steven Spielberg’s newest go-to star). Sam has a simple plan: Get a Car; then Get the Girl (played by the VERY hot Megan Fox). When the car turns out to be a canary-yellow 1977 Camaro Autobot named Bumblebee, the action starts.

Yes, there are hiccups in the story here. Occasionally, if you pause, you have to wonder: “What?” But pro-action director Michael Bay (of Bad Boys fame) doesn’t allow you to pause. The action is steady, constant and fierce. Due to the realistic graphics that define the Transformers, it’s hard to sometimes keep up with who’s-who when the robots do battle. Still, that’s often made up with cool bangs and cheesy slow-mo sequences.

Transformers just rips along and by the time all 144 minutes have run by, you’ll wonder where the time went! The brilliant and witty script makes up for any cliché action film holes. Further, the ensemble cast, featuring a mix of quality actors (Jon Voight; John Turturro) and eye-candy (Fox; Josh Duhamel; Tyrese Gibson; Aussie Rachael Taylor) do a great job of investing reality into a ‘talking-cars movie’.

Then again, if you’re an 80s child, you paid your $14 to see those talking cars! And that alone earns every cent!
